The Webb Brothers - Who Put The Roo In The Stew
The Webb Brothers, Fabian, Marius and Berard are three genuine brothers, who come from Gympie, Queensland, where they have lived all their lives on their "Thornside" properties. Not only are they well known for their excellent cattle production, but they are equally talented in writing and performing Australian country music.
Apart from recording, the Webb Brothers have made a number of television appearances, their most successful being a feature on the ABC's "A Big Country". Filmed on the Webb's family property, this documentary showed the lives, work and musical careers of the three brothers. This programme was broadcast throughout Australia as well as New Zealand and England. Due to the programme's enormous popularity, the Southland Country Music Association of New Zealand then invited the brothers to tour New Zealand, and in 1974, the brothers toured the South Island, playing to packed houses wherever they went. It was during this tour that the very successful "Live in New Zealand Album," was recorded in Christchurch.
1982 was a special year for the Webb Brothers - being the year in which they celebrated 100 years since their grandfather selected the family property "Thornside". September 1982 also marked 25 years as Country Music recording artists. When deciding to open their gates with a special celebration to mark these dual landmarks, no-one could have possibly predicted that it would have grown into the largest outdoor music festival in Australia.
On September 24, 25, and 26 1982, the Webb Brothers invited the public to join with them on their "Thornside" property for the "Webb Brothers Country Music Muster". Some 6,000 people helped the brothers and their families celebrate both a silver jubilee and centenary occasion in style. ABC's "A Big Country" was on hand to film this historic event (the first time "Big Country" had filmed two features on the same subject matter). The Webb Brothers used this occasion to launch their newest album - " Silver Jubilee Album," featuring the smash hit - "Who Put The Roo In Stew". The Country Music Muster continues to this day on the Gympie district. Their latest releases include their albums "Mustering On" and "The Best of the Webb Brothers". We hope you enjoy one of their most famous recordings. "The Call Of The Bellbird"

Such a funny song, had never heard it before it was on the radio today.
❤
This song was written by my father, Les Dalkin in the 1960s.
❤️🎶
I remember Mr. Fabian, our farm was just down from his, I would come by with pop and talk about music for hours. Its good to see Mr Fabian as a young fellow.
The answer is in the first verse - it was Ronald's wife Nancy-Lou. She cooked the stew ... so there you are. I daresay that might be a reference to a certain US president?
Wish I could play yidaki like that!
I remember hearing this up at Noosa during the September holidays of 1981. I think it was hey hey it's Saturday
Swagman, I think the time has come Swagman, your race has all but run Swagman, oh, it's time to take your bluey home. It's raining, your body aches with cold Complaining? Complaints are growing old So swagman, oh, it's time to take your bluey home. You've seen the mountains, seen the streams, Laid your pathful, filled your dreams Lived the life that most men only dream, So listen now as the dingo howls Now's the time to take your bows, You don't have to live here all alone. Swagman, oh, it's time to take your bluey home. Swagman, I think the time has come Swagman, your race has all but run Swagman, oh, it's time to take your bluey home. It's raining, your body aches with cold Complaining? Complaints are growing old So swagman, oh, it's time to take your bluey home.
Thank you so much for uploading this! My very elderly grandfather was nostalgic for forgotten folk songs of his youth and was so overjoyed to be able to hear this one again
As a child, almost every Xmas, we as a family used to go on a camping holiday in Dad's then new Chesney caravan at Hervey Bay at Torguay or Scarness beach front Esplanade camping grounds. Almost every night we used to have fish and chips at the Torguay Hotel beer garden and there we watched the Webb Brothers perform. Extrovert Dad became friends with the Webb Brothers over the years and drank pots of beer with them at our table in between songs. Geez, they were great days as a child, and as a child I loved their performances at the then Torquay Hotel beer garden. I am 67 years of age now and Dad has since passed away! I can remember those days as clear as a bell, as I do the roller skating at the little open air Scarness Skating Rink on the beach front!

The best part of this song is hearing the names of the old politicians of the day. Ah yes, Ronald Reagan, Malcolm Fraser, Doug Anthony, Joh Bjelke-Petersen - gone but not forgotten!

Anyone have Bicycle Wreck by Webb Brothers? It is listed here but they don't have it.
I randomly taped this off the radio in Dunedin back then...always remember this song...classic
What a lovely song. I'd never heard it before, or of the Webb brothers, but I am definitely a fan now.
It is a beautiful song and they sing it so well. It makes me homesick for a place I've never been and it makes me long to see a new found Australian friend I haven't met in person.
1981 - SEPTEMBER It started with an eagled-eyed food inspector on the scene in San Diego, California on July 27,1981 and almost destroyed the $1 billion a year beef export trade of Australia. A vigilant food inspector became suspicious of three frozen blocks of imported Australian beef that looked "darker and stringier" than bona fide boneless beef should be. Yep Kangaroo Meat! Also on the scene, what RCA Australia described at the time as “the fastest released and fastest selling record they had ever handled in Australia” had been released by The Webb Brothers. Marius Webb penned the lyrics "The Colonel put the lickin' in the chicken, but who put the Roo in the stew?"Recorded in Brisbane's Sunshine Studio, the song was released with RCA Sydney. Due to it's topical nature, everything about the song was done quickly to coincide with the beef scandal. It was written, recorded and released as a single within ten days - climbed to # 7 on 4BK Music’s chart.
It is based on a roo meat scandel on OZ.

ma.elyssadiane Villa haha love you to
SAW117able hahaha, its really funny ,love you most tiddy 😍
<3 <3 love you
hey, did u happen to find out who actually put the roo in the stew?
That was referring to a big meat substitution scandal, when a large meat packing plant was found to be mixing roo and horse meat along with the beef and exporting it to the USA..
I'm pretty sure the Webb brothers ran a "Hootenanny" near Gympie in 1966, it was the year we left Gymoie. I was too young to go, but I knew someone who did. Might have been at Widgee, not Amamoor though
their music is very nice, relaxing -due to a book i was reading i have found their songs a real delight thanks xo
My second favourite of theirs ... my favourite is The June Rose Waltz

I love this great bit of Aussie country ! There is a very good instrumental version of it by Barry Thornton, who played guitar for many years with Slim Dusty.
